First Assignemnt Blog: Self Description

what name you go by if it is different from the name on the course enrollment?

My name is Jacob Hugentobler.

your hometown and Trinity major?

I do not have a home town because I have moved around many different countries my entire life. I have lived in six different countries and visited many more on vacation or school field trips. Checkout my facebook application “Where I’ve Been” for the complete list. I am considering majoring in Education, with a focus on social sciences, or in Chemical Engineering.

your interests, your background and your campus activities?

I have broad interests in many types of activities. However since I am recovering from recent leg surgery, I cannot play sports until 2010. In the mean time, I hope to excel in classes and participate in MUN.

your technology background and any special skills or concerns you may have?

The school I graduated from was the American School of Bombay, where every student was required to have a laptop for working on. Everything was electronic and learning was done from laptops. I did not regard this as more effective than traditional methods of learning, but it did allow me to sharpen my computer skills in general.

your interest in the field of education?

Teaching Middle and Secondary school would be my preference and interest.

Your reaction to the Time Person of the Year 2006 article?

I disagree with Time’s assessment of the impact of the internet. I believe that it is not the most influential substitute for a person in 2006. The internet has been a key instrument of Globalization and bringing people of the world together, but it is not the most important. Remember that only those who can afford a computer can access the internet on a regular basis and enjoy its educational value. More people in the world can afford radio and indeed Television than the internet. There is still no guarantee that it reduces cultural ignorance in the eyes of its members. Some surf the internet to chat with their friends, download illegally and procrastinate from hard work; often without a thought of the world’s decaying environment and miserable majority. I personally attribute my academic success to spending over 1,000 man-hours of my time to watching Discovery Channel, NGC, and The History Channel on TV. The internet isn’t as beneficial for mankind as tech-enthusiasts claim it to be. Instead, Time Magazine’s Man of the Year 2006 should have been Steve Irwin, who tragically died in September of that year filming marine life in the hope that we would stop surfing the web and care to save it.

  1. Very interesting comments on the article, Jacob. Technology is definitely not THE answer to the world's ills.

I think your blog would flow a bit better if you left out the assignment sentences:-)

  2. I think it is so cool that you have lived in six different countries and that you went to school in Bombay. Your point of view on the article was really interesting and you brought up some really good points about people's use of the internet.
